Sprint U.S. Snowboarding and Freeskiing Grand Prix
This week, we are excited to host the Sprint U.S. Snowboarding and Freeskiing Grand Prix event at Canyons! What is this Grand Prix, you ask? Only one of the most exciting events of the season – a fast paced, thrilling Snowboardcross and Skicross race. Four athletes at a time fly down the course at incredible speeds, rounding banked turns, jumps, and other features, all while trying to stay up and in the front of the pack.
Snowboardcross is fairly new to the world stage – it only became an Olympic sport in 2006. Skiercross is even newer than that, joining the Olympics in 2010. This week at Canyons, we have athletes from all over the world competing on our course to take home the title of National Champion. Both events are FIS NorAm sanctioned, allowing athletes to gain valuable points for FIS ranking, and FIS NorAm will crown the National Champion following the races at our resort! Salt Lake City local Fay Guilini is looking to defend her title as 2012 Snowboardcross National Champion, and we have high hopes our own Canyons athlete Jonathon Cheever will take back the Snowboardcross National Champion title after his 2011 winning season.
The course build is not an easy feat, with Canyons blowing snow for almost a month to ensure the coverage needed for the course. USSA Course builder Jake Ingle has been working through the night for almost 2 weeks to ensure the course is perfect for the athletes and the competition. Practice for the athletes began Monday and will continue until until Skiercross Qualifiers begin on Today and Snowboardcross Qualifiers on Thursday.

Don’t forget to stick around for local reggae band Patwa’s free concert in the resort village following the events on Saturday!
