Opening Day 2013
One of the most gorgeous opening days in recent memory greeted guests today at the start of what promises to be an Epic year. It’s our first year under Vail Resorts ownership, so guests noticed EPICMIX signage in front of every lift (how many pins did you earn today?), but in the words of another visitor, “Skiing at Canyons is like riding a bike. Just nice to be back in the saddle.”
And Saddleback was where the action was today, starting at just after 9am when two-time Olympian Kaylin Richardson greeted First Chair riders. Kemper Allison and his buddies had been in line since Thursday evening to make sure they earned the first turns of the year.
Many early-arriving guests also met Canyons’ Epic Team ski jumper Sarah Hendrickson. The charming Park City native who first skied Canyons at age 2 also remembers helping teach Matt Lauer how to ski jump (when she was only 7) during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Now 19 years old and making a swift recovery from knee surgery in the spring, she remains one of the favorites to win the first ever women’s medal in Olympic Ski Jumping in Sochi.
Other highlights of the day included the arrival of a half-dozen Epic Racers. Scrambling around Utah, Colorado and California before heading to the Midwest and Europe, Epic Racers Matt, GoBryanGo, Josephine and others marked their checklists, grabbed their photos, scanned their Epic Passes and plotted their next resort. Several said skiing with Kaylin Richardson was one of the highlights of their young season. We wish them all the best as the race to win a lifetime Epic Pass heats up!
Perhaps the best part of Opening day is that … TOMORROW IS SATURDAY! It’s the weekend, folks – and we hope everyone comes out to enjoy another bluebird day. And just around the corner, there’s snow in the forecast. Like you, we can’t wait.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Opening Day today!
